There are some tasks that make sense to do on your own and others that require the help of a pro. And it can be difficult to determine when to go the DIY route and when to bring in help. Do you do your own taxes or hire an accountant? Should you paint the house on your own or bring in a painting contractor? Should you deal with termites on your own or work with a pro? At TAPS Termite, we cannot answer the first two questions for you. But when it comes to termites, we recommend working with a pro. Protecting your home from termites can be a complex task. A trained and licensed termite pro can accurately determine if you have a termite infestation, provide services to eradicate an active infestation, point out issues that make your home vulnerable to termites, and implement a program for preventative treatment.

Accurately determine if you have a termite infestation

The first step in protecting your home from termites is to determine if you already have an active infestation. Termites typically spend their time out of sight, hidden in galleries in structural wood members and deep in the soil around and underneath, which means you can have an infestation and not know it. It takes time to see signs of termite damage around your home. By the time you do see evidence of termite activity it is likely that the pests have been in your home for a while- sometimes several years. It can be extremely difficult to determine if you have a termite infestation on your own. The places termites infest and the signs they leave behind are easy to overlook if you do not have training or experience spotting them. Working with a pro can help you quickly and accurately determine if you have an active infestation. Once you know whether or not you have an infestation, you can move forward in your efforts to protect your home from termites.

Provide services to eradicate an active infestation

An active termite infestation in your home can cause damage around the clock. Trying to deal with a termite infestation on your own may leave your home and family at risk. If you do not completely eradicate the infestation then it will continue to grow and cause damage. Improper mixing and application of pesticides by unlicensed applicators can also result in harm to the applicator or occupants of the structure. The reality is that termites are notoriously difficult to eradicate. A termite pro can quickly and effectively eradicate termites from your home. And, reliable termite pros offer a guarantee on their work. This means that you can work with a pro and rest assured that your home is properly protected from termites.

Point out issues that make your home vulnerable to termites

It is possible for your home to be at risk of a termite infestation – even if the inspection was clear. This is because termite swarmers leave their colonies either in Spring or Late Summer to look for new places to infest once their current colony (or gallery) becomes overcrowded. Even if your home is termite-free right now, it could potentially become infested in the future. As part of the inspection, the termite pro will note issues that make your home vulnerable to termites in a formal inspection report. The pro will discuss these issues with you so you can take steps to remedy them.

Implement a schedule for routine preventative treatment

You can also work with a pro to establish routine preventative termite treatment and monitoring. Bait stations can be installed around the property to actively monitor for Subterranean Termite infestation and eradicate it often before it reaches the structure. Pre- and post-construction applications of wood preservatives such as borates underneath and around the foundation, in subarea and/or attic framing can protect against a variety of wood destroying pests and organisms and prolong the life of structural wood, saving on repair costs over time. Having your home inspected and/or treated on a schedule will ensure that it is protected from the threat of termites all year long.

Working with a termite pro is the most effective way to protect your home from the threat of termites. A pro can help you deal with any current issues you have with termites and provide protection from future issues with these pests. Get in touch with TAPS Termite today to get the process started.
